Tips for setting up an alternative press — with Veronica (Fractious Press)
The folks who comprise Fractious Press had never worked in and knew nothing about the publishing industry before we put out our first book. Taking our cue from the zine and independent music worlds, somehow things worked out. Since then, we have learned a thing or two about how books are released the 'conventional' way--though that doesn't mean we are any less enthusiastic about our discoveries through trial and error. We're not the most well-known, the most innovative, or the most unconventional of presses; we're writers and artists and students and teachers and dreamers who know we still have a long way to go before the publishing landscape is released from dependence on the B&Ns and Bertelsmanns and Amazons. But what excites us just as much as sharing our art/work through our books, comics, and more is the possibility that, building on collective knowledge, others can find a way to do so too.
