New York, NYA collaboration between Fractious Press and friends at Kaboom!Press, Oral History Literature, We'll Never Have Paris, iLOANbooks, and the Ding Dong Lounge, May Day at Ding Dong: A Celebration of Labors of Love is a zine and small press (and lots of other stuff) fair, with a full program of readings and music, a bookmaking demo and a puppet show, and all sorts of shenanigans uptown.
Vendors include Bluestockings, the Indypendent, Munchkinfish, Dreamriver, Get Ahead magazine, Kurt Boone Books, Mountain Landis Recordings, Strangers Gate Books, Purgatory Pie Press, Fiction Circus, Kaboom!Press, We'll Never Have Paris, iLOANbooks, and all the other performers with swag!!!

He'll be reading along with Alex Rose, of Hotel St. George Press, and Abby Walthausen, whose poetry book The Internet will be released by Fractious Press later this year. Buzz Poole is the author of Madonna of the Toast, a look at surprising iconography, named by the New Statesman as one of 2007’s Best Underground Books. His writing on books, music, art, and design has appeared in numerous publications, including the Village Voice, Print, the Believer, the Millions, Washington Square, and Spork. I Like to Keep My Troubles on the Windy Side of Things is his first collection of fiction.
Alex Rose has published stories and essays in the New York Times, the Believer, Fantasy Magazine, the American Scholar, the North American Review, the Providence Journal, the Forward, Ploughshares, Obit-Mag, and DIAGRAM, as well as on many popular blogs such as the Millions and PopMatters. His hypertext novel, Synapse: the Weblog of Catherine Bloom, was serialized on the Hotel St. George website. His debut collection, The Musical Illusionist and Other Tales, was described by Library Journal as “a potential cult classic” and an “utterly original work of fiction.” His short story, “Ostracon,” was recently included in the 2009 edition of The Best American Short Stories edited by Alice Sebold, and his essay, “Stranger in a Strange Land” is set to appear in New York Stories, an anthology of New York Times features.
Abby Walthausen likes to write what could be considered the "historical fiction" of poetry. She spends her time taking all the fun out of poetry for high school students. -

Today, as traditional publishers reassess how they do business, independent presses soldier on, promoting writers they believe in by making their work available in attractive and affordable volumes. Ugly Duckling Presse and Fractious Press are two such publishers and tonight their authors Rachel Levitsky, Kevin Varrone, John Cotrona, and Buzz Poole will read from works of poetry and fiction. Indie singer-songwriter stalwart Franklin Bruno will also perform a solo set of music.
Rachel Levitsky is the author of two full-length volumes, Neighbor (Ugly Duckling Presse) and Under the Sun (Futurepoem Books). She’s released five chapbooks of poetry, Dearly (a+bend), Dearly 356, Cartographies of Error (Leroy), The Adventures of Yaya and Grace (PotesPoets) and 2(1x1)Portraits (Baksun). Levitsky’s poetry plays have been performed in New York and San Francisco. In 1999, Levitsky founded Belladonna Series as a means to amplify the hushed existence of the feminist avant garde practice of writing.
Kevin Varrone is the author of the chapbooks g-point almanac (6.21-9.21) (ixnay press) and the collections, g-point almanac: id est (9.22-12.21) (Instance Press) and g-point almanac: passyunk lost (12.21-3.21) (Ugly Duckling Presse). He lives and works in Philadelphia.
Franklin Bruno has released a dozen albums on independent labels (Scat, Shrimper, Simple Machines) since the early 1990s, as frontman for Nothing Painted Blue and as a solo artist. His most recent recordings are Local Currency (Fayettenam), a reissue of seven-inches and compilation tracks, and Civics (Tight Ship), the debut CD by his current band the Human Hearts. He is a frequent collaborator with the Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle, appearing on the 4AD albums The Sunset Tree and Get Lonely, and in the occasional duo the Extra Lens. He is the author of a book on Elvis Costello’s Armed Forces (in Continuum’s 33 1/3 series), and the poetry chapbook Policy Instrument (Lame House). His essays and criticism have appeared in the Nation, the Believer, Oxford American, and Da Capo’s Best Music Writing series. A native of Southern California’s Inland Empire, he lives and writes in Jackson Heights, Queens.
John Cotrona is the author of the story collection Lost Positives, which was named the Village Voice Best of New York 2005 and Broken Pencil's Fiction Book of the Issue. His short stories and poems have appeared in Cometbus and No Duh, and in a smattering of other zines. A spoken-word edition of his story "Manual" was released as a vinyl record as Cometbus 45 1/2. John's latest collection of stories and essays, The Scapegoat's Agony, is forthcoming from Fractious Press.
